Thanks Jamie for writing about this very important issue. Making homes energy efficient so they don't leak heat makes economic sense, for the residents and the country, as well as meaning the house remains comfortable to live in without a constant stream of energy wasted to heat it in the winter.Given the urgency of the situation, both due to people falling into debt due to COVID and the need for a 'green recovery', and the need as advised by scientists to make the bulk of our carbon reductions as soon as possible in this decade leading up to 2030, and the recent government announcement to target 68% carbon reduction overall (from 1990 levels) by 2030, we need to do things as fast as possible. We know how to build zero carbon homes now. Building regulations were supposed to require it by 2016, but the government cancelled this. They are now saying 2025. This and 'pledging to build zero carbon house types by 2030' is far too little too late. It's good that the government and Barrett and Wilson Homes are saying something, but they need to go much faster than this. They are building lots of new homes today in Wichelstowe, will these all need to be retrofitted again by 2030?The most immediate thing they should be doing is making sure most homes face south to make the most of the sunshine, testing their homes for airtightness and fitting them with heat recovery ventilation. This is much easier to do during construction than afterwards. Can they confirm they are doing this? They also need to be at least making the homes ready for low carbon heating and fitting renewables: for example fitting hot water cylinders suitable for heat pumps, and providing customers the option of a heat pump instead of a gas boiler, if not fitting these as standard. Everyone should look for these things when buying a new home fit for the future. It is not right that housebuilders should cut corners today so residents have to pay much larger bills in the future, either for heating or retrofitting what they should have had in the first place. ...

So who's doing Veganuary in Swindon? A lot expected to join this UK-originated campaign worldwide according to this article. Eating out will be tricky (though the fantastic local takeaway Eggelicious is open again from Jan 4th, plus Subway has good vegan options across the town), but Swindon Pulse Wholefood Cooperative has all you need to eat at home (as well as most supermarkets now) and Vegan Recipe Club have lots of inspiring recipes if you have some time to cook. This is one area where mass individual action is leading the charge to address climate and nature emergencies. Enjoy 🙂 ...
